About Gig Harbor, Washington

It was a heavy storm that earned Gig Harbor its unique name way back in 1840, when American naval officer and explorer Charles Wilkes tied up his small boat – or gig – in the harbor to keep it safe as rains and winds buffeted the area. When Wilkes drew up a map of the Oregon Territory the following year, he dubbed the waters “Gig Harbor” in memory of the event. For the next century, the Gig Harbor area would be home to many other captains and seafarers who fished, clammed and explored the area’s waterways.

With its waterfront location, it’s no surprise that during its history, Gig Harbor attracted dozens of shipbuilders intent on creating watercraft for fisherman and other sportsmen to ply the local waters. In recent years, though, the shipbuilding industry has all but left Gig Harbor; still, the fishing boats remain, cruising the waters of Puget Sound and heading north toward Alaska during the height of fishing season. And every year in June, the city pays homage to its roots with the annual Blessing of the Fleet ceremony intended to keep fisherman and their boats safe throughout the summer fishing season.

Gig Harbor has come a long way since that stormy day in 1840 when Captain Wilkes secured his gig and returned to his ship to brave the elements.
