About Pierce County, Washington
Named for President Franklin Pierce, who was president at the time the county was formed, Pierce County is perhaps known best as the “home” of Mount Rainier, the tallest peak in the Cascade Range and backdrop of, oh, probably tens of thousands of postcards and photos. Of course, the county is home to plenty of other naturally beautiful spots, including miles of coastline, scenic islands and the Clearwater Wilderness, featuring old-growth timber as well as many native species of plants and animals.
Although the county wasn’t officially formed until 1852, a couple of decades earlier, the Hudson Bay Company established a fort here, and of course, like the rest of the Pacific Northwest, the Pierce County area was home to Native Americans for thousands of years before Europeans ever arrived. In addition to Hudson Bay, Pierce County became the site of an early lumber business founded by Swedish settler Nicholas de Lin, who recognized the commercial value in the vast acres of untapped lumber. The growth continued with the building of the North Pacific Railroad, and despite a few ups and downs (after all, who can forget the great hops lice infestation of 1891?), the county has continued to grow and thrive.
